Which Tire to Choose?
After looking for 38x12.5xR17's for the past 15-20min I've come to the conclusion that they are extremely rare, or don't exist.
Now I'm stuck with the choice of a 37x13.5xR17 Nitto Mud Grappler, or just go balls to the walls with a 40x13.5xR17.
Toyo has the Open country M/T's that I currently have but only in a 37x13.5xR17, their 40's don't run on 17's
and I'm not going to buy new rims. (the tires above are rated for 8.5-11 widths, my rims are 8.5x17")
I'll have my 5.13's installed next month, but if I'm going to go to 40's I'll probably end up getting 5.38's.
A) Nitto Mud grappler 37's or 40's
B) Toyo OC M/T 37's
C) Suggestions Please

I understand your dilemma. The proliferation of rim sizes from 16-20" has diluted the number of tires available for each rim.
In terms of tire height, 36" and 38" tall are the least common. I was looking for a tire at least and inch wider than my 35x12.5x18s but I wanted to go to a smaller rim for better rim protection. I found some KM2s that are 36x13.5 but they are made for 17" rims.
There are a couple of factors that helps the situation. Depending on the shoulder design some tires are taller are effectively taller when under load for a given tire pressure. For instance KM2s lack the full width tread with wide square shoulders, so they tend to have a slightly lower height under load compared to others like Toyo MT, MTRs and STTs. A difference in tire pressure between 30-35 psi can also make a small but noticeable difference in tire height.
So if tire height is that important, you can find a 37" tire that will have the same effective height as a 38" under load.

The largest KM2 I could have would be a 37. The 40x14.5xR17 has a minimum mounting width of 10-12" and my rims are only 8.5".
None of the Maxxis tire's I've found have a mounting width of 8.5"...All are in the 10-11" range. Even their 35 creepy crawlers are @ 10"

MTR Kevlar and Nitto mud grappler both are available in 40X13.50R17LT and both are Approved Rim Width (inches) 8.5 - 11.0
