Default Tire confusion!!!

Ok I've been reading forums all over the net about upping tire size on my 2010 Mountain edition JK.

With my reading I decided to go with a 2.5" lift and bushwhacker flat top flares with the intention of putting 35s under her. After being quoted $2000 to regear to 5.13 I began to rethink 35s and look at 33s. But I've found that the opinions on regearing with 35s varies about as much as the forums do. Some are saying it is required to have any power, others that they have no issues, others that all you need is a retune and drop in filter and upgraded exhaust and you will be fine with anything but the more hardcore off roading.

This is my first jeep and live in the Texas hill country. This is my daily driver, but I only live 4 miles from where I work. I am not a weekend warrior off roading but I do go out with my brother sometimes, use if around the ranch after bad weather, and am in a place that can flash flood
Pretty quick. I also hike and need my girl to get me into some remote places.

That said, should I just go with a 33x12.50 on my 17" wheels or try to go with the 35s based what I use it for.

Sorry for the long post but this is my first jeep to customize, I was in a sports car before this and there is a big dif in the customizing.

The 2nd pic on here is what I am hoping it will look like with the flares and lift.

Thanks for helping out a jeep and forum newb

2K for regear is high. I live in DE and I have been quoted 1000-1300.

Ya I felt it was high, way too high, so that made me rethink the 35s

Find a different shop to do the regear.

Yeah, most people that have re-geared on here have paid between $1000-$1500, average being $1200. $2000 is waayyy to high.

Hey Adian.. sounds like you are in the same boat I was in about 6 months ago. Long story short, go with 35s. I put on a 2.5" Teraflex Coil/Shock lift with near 35s (295/70R18 or about 34.6") and after 2 months they look small. I am running stock everything else more or less (see signature below).

I do have the 4:10 gears and am completely satisfied with the power. I will upgrade to a hypertech or superchips in the near future and save for gears in a year or so. I will say, driving up in the mountains of Colorado was a workout for the JK, but its a Jeep not a Lamborghini. the new gears will be great, but can wait.

See if you can find a local group and test drive a lifted one..

Have a 2010 Sahara with auto transmission and went through this exercise recently too. For your purposes, I'd think 33's would work fine, however, make no mistake, you'll want to regear for the 33's as well. A proper regear makes all the difference in the world.

My opinion: If you have the auto and go with 33's, then regear to either 4.56 or 4.88. Personally, I went with 4.88 and feels perfect to me -- 2350rpm at 70mph -- right in the sweet spot. If you go with 35's then 5.13 seems right. Either way, if it's your daily driver and you're in hill country, then a regear is in your future.

with flat flares and a 2" lift Id definitly go with 35s, I had 33s on before my 2" lift was installed , after I decided on 35s as the 33s looked too small . Go with the flashpac for now and see how she feels. I have no issues with the 3.73 gears for now, Oh yeah if your sticking to the stock rims your gonna need spacers. By the way here on Long Island I havent found anything cheaper than 2000 for gears either

Once you get the wheeling bug you will be constantly upgrading to larger tires and other stuff. Get your wallet ready. Screaming Lizards in Bedford, TX is a great place to get gears and other mods at a reasonable price. I would wait and see how much the jeeping bug hits you before starting with 33's. Just my opinion. Oh, and welcome to the forum.
