So i just got my AEV wheels and Hankook LT285 70/17 10 ply tires put on my Sahara Unlimited. The tire's have a max psi of 80 and my jeep rides like a tank, I know it's never going to be smooth, but I'm just wondering what pressure I could lower them down to try and smooth the ride out a little bit.

 

Anywhere between 30-40 PSI. I run mine at around 38-40 PSI with my Rancho's set at 3/5. Rides better than factory.

 

Do you have them set at the maximum pressure? A good way to determine how low of a pressure to run is to do a "chalk test" or something similar and lower the pressure as much as you can while still retaining a proper contact patch. We usually find that around 25 psi works well for the street but the weight of the vehicle and sidewall thickness have a lot to do with it.

 

38-40 PSI? Wow, must ride like a dream....

Way too much pressure. Do a chalk test like Smashboogie suggested and you will get a proper idea of how much psi. 38-40 crazy

My old 285/70 Duratracs liked to be right around 28- 30 psi.

 

Same here. My M/Ts have the best contact patch at 29 psi.

I would think 80 psi must feel like the Flintstone's vehicle.

 

Actually, it rides great. My tires, like most others like them, are 80 psi rated. I've experimented with various psi, and 40 psi warranted me the best ride/fuel economy combination. My tire wear is also spot on. Be sarcastic if you want, but I'm running 33's and get 21 mpg on the road. I have 12k on them and they're showing no signs of wear. And where my tires are stiffer I can dial my shocks softer to help with the ride.

 

Not being sarcastic. Just letting you know you have too much air in your tires. 21mpg in 2014 with a 3.6 and 33's is not, no pun intended, hard.

 

Was for me. I've had different luck with different tires on different weight rigs. Another guy on this site Copyguy and I both tried 35 psi after our last trail run. We are both running cooper/mastercraft tires. Both of our mileage took a big hit, me personally 3 mpg average. I clear my trip meter and divide by the gallons I pump in everytime I fill up, I don't use the dash gauge despite it being just about spot on after flashing with the procal. Bumped the pressure back up and the mileage went back where it was. so what's more important, ride quality or mpg? Most will say you didn't get a jeep for mpg, and that true. But if you can find a good balance and get both, that makes sense to me. The balance on my rig with mastercraft mxt's is 40. The ride is good. So no, I don't have too much air in my tire, you have too little in yours. 😎
