Default Tire Pressure questions?

I am running 33" BFG AT's on my 2" lifted JK 2dr at this time. They are currently inflated to 40 PSI all around, from the shop that installed them last year. I do not tow anything on a regular basis. The side wall indicates max 65 PSI cold. I am happy with ride and feel at the current 40 PSI.

My question is...Do I risk greater highway instability, if I increase the pressure to 46 or 48 PSI? I certainly don't want the tires wearing prematurely. Will 46 PSI make the center tread wear that much faster? I am fine with a little stiffer ride BTW, as long as safety is not compromised. I am asking to see if that would give a little better MPG.

I conducted a thread search, and found some information, but was not sure it answered my questions, sorry for creating a redundant thread...Thanks in advance.

WOW! 40psi you must be able to feel every pebble and crack in the road.

I have 305/70R16(33x12.5) BFG ATs on 16x10 wheels, I run 32psi front and 30psi rear. Off road I start at 15psi and go down from there, but not lower than 10psi.(no bead locks)

I always run whatever it says on the door. In my case, it says 35 PSI. Like others say, air down for off road.

HMMM sounds like even the 40 PSI is rather high. Not sure why the tire dealer would put at 40 then. The harder ride at 40 PSI did not bother me at all. I am guessin I am gonna go down to 35 and see if that doesn't impact my mileage drastically....

I do alot of highway driving....I run 35psi and am happy with wear, actually wears very even, rides a little rough though.....I myself would not run higher, as it starts to run like a tank....but as soon as I hit the trail...down to 15-16psi always....

do a chalk test...
X2

A chalk test is when you make heavy chalk line across the tread. Take it out quick trip around the block. Adjust the air psi down if the chalk wears off the center tread first, add air if chalk wears of the out tread first. Repeat until the chalk wears off evenly across the tread.
