Default tire question

How wide can you go using the stock 18" rims. Right now I have 70's and I would like to know just how much wider I can go before I lose the bead?

Is there a chart or app that will convert the metric tire ratings to standard?

There is an iPhone /iPad app called TireSizer that takes all the guesswork out of it. Works with metric and domestic sizes and converts.

ABOUT TIRESIZER

TireSizer is a tire size calculator and provides other useful information about your vehicle's tires and wheels.

TireSizer quickly calculates the height of your vehicle's tires and axles when you want to replace your tires or rims with wider or narrower sizes, or taller or shorter sizes to raise or lower your vehicle.

It uses your passenger or light truck tire size data such as P237/75/R15 (tread width, aspect ratio and rim diameter).

TireSizer also works with flotation truck tire sizes such as 31x10.5R16, high flotation agricultural tires 66x44.00-25, high flotation forestry tires 68x70.00-32, and large P-metric flotation tires 700/55-34 and 850/50-30.

70 is the sidewall height, not the width. The bigger number (285, 315) is the width, which also takes into account the height or rim width or something else? --> Convert every tire you look at to standard just in case.

Just search with your favorite browser. Type in 'metric to standard tire conversion' or 'metric calculator' or any number of terms. There are plenty of sites out there offering conversions.

Or go to the website of any tire maker/retailer. They will all list the standard dimensions for their metric tires.

For the rim width, every manufacturer will list the recommended width for all of their tires. If you want to go out side of that window, talk to your installer to make sure that they will mount them for you. Some will, some won't. (I think a 13.5" width on a stock rim is the widest I have seen posted)

My current tires are 265 70R18 my last set where 255's. I thought the bigger number was the tire height and the 70 was the width.
