I do a 5 tire rotation. Aside from the inevitable trail damage bringing the 5th into rotation, I have never wanted to buy the exact same tires twice in a row. (seems there is always something new and better coming along, right?).

I try to do a 5 rotation when I remember, want to try and keep all 5 as equal as possible so if I do use the spare it's not too noticable. Also agree with maybe wanting to replace with new tires instead of feeling like I'm locked into what I have because the spare is still new...

5. I take the spare off; jack up the left-rear; put the spare there, and move the old left-rear to the left-front, and so forth. I'm hoping to get even mileage out of all of them. When it comes time to get new tires, I'll probably buy 5 again.

5 is the way to go if you have a spare, as you will get 20% more life out of the tires.
