Default Tire Width vs. Wheel Width

Real quick guys, looking at getting the BFG All Terrains LT305/65R18/E, The width of the tire is 8.5 - 11 but I understand the width of the Stock 08' Sahara wheel is only 7.5" is it okay to put an 8.5-11 width tire on a 7.5 width Wheel? Im getting a 2.5" BB as a heads up so don't worry about saying I wont have clearance for a 33.5" tire.

I was told by my tire guy that the tread face shouldn't be more that 2" wider than the rim width, so I ignored him and and put 31x10.5x15 on my 7x15 rims and guess what..........it drove like S#!T I should have listened.

The car felt like I was driving on Jell-O all the time and God fobid that I had to do a quick left-right-left with the steering wheel (to avoid something like a pot hole). That quick manuver would set up a very scarry and unstable feeling like I was towing a 3ton trailer doing that manuver.

I spent a modest amount on those tires (about 600$ , BFG ATs) but I hated them for 60,000 miles.

Well then I COULD be okay with 7.5 to a 8.5-11 wheel right? Thats MAX 2 inches

Most industry experts recommend 2-3" difference for wheel width/tire width. The section width of that tire is 12", so by going with what the industry experts suggest you should use a 9-10" wide wheel.

I'm not understanding the 8.5-11?
7.5" rim means a 9.5" to 10.5" tread face , aka. section width.

Yah sorry I was looking at the wrong column that is the Rim Width Range in inches...So I guess a 7.5 inch wide wheel will not work for that tire...I gotta look into a different tire then, because I do not want to buy new wheels...I am going to check out the new Wrangle DuraTracs and see if they have a 33" with a 7.5" width Tire

Just checked out the Wrangler DuraTrac's LT295/65R18 and the approved Rim Widths are 8.0-10.0 with the section width 11.8

here's a cool site that I use for figuring out tire sizes, it's a converter from metric, example,265/75/16 to standard 31.6x10.4x16
redrock4x4.com/tech/tire_calc.php?txtWidth=265&txtAspect=75&txtRim=16& submitButtonName=Calculate&method=metric

I ran a 33x12.50R17 FC-II on a 17x7.5 rim on my Dodge Ram with no issues and road great off-on road conditions.

I am running a 33x12.50R17 Cooper STT on a 17x8 rim...no issues and rides great! I know a few members are running 12.50 wide tires on stock rims.

Really? Okay then. And 12.50 is more than the 11.2 or w.e so that gives me some hope. Thanks man
