Towing/Hitch question
So, the only option I didn't get on my 2014 JKUR is the max tow package. I want to borrow my sisters jet ski to take to the beach this weekend but I obviously need a hitch. If I buy a hitch from the dealership and install it myself, is that basically the same as having the max tow package? I'm not looking to run the electrical yet, just the hitch. Does the dealer have to activate anything on the Jeeps computer?
Not sure right off hand what is included with the "max tow package"....I installed a hitch (and wiring) to my base model sport. Nothing for the dealer to do...just bolt on the hitch and run the wiring.
On a Sport, it may include lower gears than the stock 3.21's. Since you have a Rubi, it's pretty much just a hitch and harness. Don't get it from the Dealer, it'll cost you way too much. Quadratec has a few versions of hitches/harnesses with the same rating as Mopar.
I saw the hitches on quadratec that were about 1/3 the price of the Mopar - $60 compared to $200. And I have the 4.10's some gearing isn't an issue. In reference to future wiring, will I need a 4 or 7 pin? Sorry for the ignorance. Never towed anything before....
From what I've seen most stuff is 4-pin. My factory hitch is a 4-pin and I haven't had to tow anything with a 7-pin. That being said, they make adapters for like $10.

I bought my hitch off amazon for like $60 and it came with the harness. 7 pin connectors are for trailers that have integrated brakes on the axles and are round. The 4 pin is flat. I'd guess that the water toy trailer doesn't have brakes and is the flat 4 pin connector.

I did a bit of research prior to purchasing my vehicle.
Regular tow package; standard gearing, receiver hitch, 4 pin trailer wire harness, electronic stability
Max Tow package; same as above but add 3.73 gearing.
I didn't purchase either. Picked up a hitch and wire harness off of Amazon. Quadratec has some good priced options as well. Install is easy, no way would I pay anyone to do it. If you can handle a screwdriver, ratchet/socket, and a wrench, you are good to go.
4 vs 7 wire harness
4 covers just about everything. 4 wires for the basic lights. Easier to install, cheaper.
7 for larger items that have trailer brakes, or other needs such as 12v power, or reverse lights. More work to install, wires that run to the battery as well, little bit more cost. I find the 7 pin plug more durable though and worth it for me and my needs.
For your rubicon, that already has 4.10 gearing or other JKU that has 3.73 gear, just add a wire harness and hitch of your choice and you have the max tow package. This only applies to the Unlimiteds, don't think the 2 doors had this option due to the shorter wheel base.
*didn't need anything "activated" by the dealer.
