Smile Toyo A/T - 285 or 295 ?

Hello all-
I'm getting some new wheels and tires on my 4 dr X model (6 spd)
I am not going to lift it or use spacers.
The wheels are Pro Comp 1069, 16 x 8 (polished alloy for the old-school mag wheel look)
I think I have narrowed the tire choice down to Toyo Open Country A/T
The problem is which size to buy -- 285 (which is 32.7 inches) or the 295 (which is 33.3)

I've read alot on this forum and think I should be okay with the 16 x 8 and 33s, but wasn't sure if I would be pushing it with the 295s, which are slightly more than 33s, as opposed to the 285s, which are slightly less. Thanks for any input, I don't know what the hell I'm doing and want to get it right !

If this is the type of question that is frowned upon because it's been answered 100 times already, I apologize in advance.

Others on the forum have run 295s unlifted without issue but they used stock wheels and spacers. If your new wheels have less backspacing than the stock wheels you should be fine.

I actually ran 16x8 Pro Comp wheels with 295 Nitto Terra Grapplers for about 6 months with no lift. It was fine, except that I got a little bit of rub on the front bumper skid plate when the wheel was fully cranked to the left. No biggie, just a little annoying, but also pretty rare.

thanks for that info Whisky
Syndicate, did your Pro Comps have 4 inch backspacing ? And/Or do you think the size of the Nittos themselves may have played a role in that minor rub ? Thanks for any follow up -- I don't want any rubbing (or spacers) and if that means I need to drop down to 285 then that's what I'll probably do.

4.5" backspacing on the Pro Comps. Yes, I'm sure the tire size is what caused it. It sounds worse than it is, because it was only an occasional, very quick rub. It was like you had to have the wheel fully cranked and compress the shock on that side at the same time. REally no big deal, but if you absolutely don't ever want to hear any contact, I'd probably go with the 285, although there's no guarantee that the same thing wouldn't happen then.

Thanks for that follow up -- NOW I'm thinking of "tall skinnys" in the form of 222/85/16, which would still be a 33 inch tire but a skinnier one. Any views on that ? The one I am looking at is 33.2 tall, but 10.0 wide. The tread depth is 18/32 so pretty knobby. They are approved for 6.5-8 inch rim width (I'm getting 16 X 8 in the mail any day now). They are light (48 lbs) with a D load range. Telstar is the company.
It seems like it would still work without spacers or a lift ?
Thanks guys I really appreciate the input - gotta make a decision soon and just live with it !

Your over thinking it. I would just go with the 295s.

Here is a great pic of 295s (Not mine). It's a balanced size and width.

I agree. I would go with 295s. I don't think I'd want a knobby tire for a DD.
