Default TPMS Question

So, I want to get Black Rock soft 8 17" wheels. Can I have the tire pressure sensors from my current wheels transferred to these? Or can I just do without the TPMS? What happens if I don't have the sensors?

Can't tell you with these rims, but if you remove your TPMS, you will hear this "ding ding ding ding" each time you start the engine
Also, in Canada, it's illegal to remove the TPMS

You can have the stock ones taken out and rebuilt for $6.00 a piece and installed on your new rims I just did.

Get an AEV Procal module and turn off your tpms. I just had my lift, tires and procomp steel wheels installed. The sensors wouldn't fit the new wheels so I used the procal to turn my sensors to zero. No problems.

Yup, good idea for the AEV Procal My dealer refused to reflash the CPU because of the Federal Law about the TPMS

Is it possible to do this with the FlashPaq or any other programmer? I don't want to have to buy a ProCal just to be able to disable TPMS.

Default Tpms

Hi, Your TPMS will transfer to the new wheel. If you are using the factory installed TPMS from Jeep it is built into the valve stem and it is just a matter of carefully removing it form the wheel an re-instaling it in the new wheel. Some manfacturers use a TPMS that is epoxed to the actual rim and they can be very difficult to remove without damaging them. You can run without them but you will indeed get an obnoxious bell. The TPMS is tied to the ABS system and is very difficult to dis-able, but it can be done with the proper plugin and computer thru the OBD. This is a violation of federal law, really no big deal unless you have a crash, someone gets killed and a clever lawyer will rake you over the coals and portray you as a danger to the driving public and the safety of the nation.
The system used by Chrysler for the TPMS really doesn't measure tire pressure, it measures tire rotation so if a tire gets slack it's rolling radius is reduced creating greater rotational speed the TPMS measures the difference in tire rotation of that wheel and sets off the alarm.
So, just re-install your TPMS and inflate your tires to the proper pressure and run them a few hundred yards down the road and the light will go out and you will be ready to Jeep!

Thanks, paragain, and everyone else, for all the good info. I will transfer my TPMS to the new rims and get a flashpaq as well.

jdcjeep, let us know if transferring the TPMS was successful. Since I'm sure 90% of us are curious about this as well.

As for me... I am thinking about moving frmo 17s to 16s. I am wondering if I can still use the factory TPMS in the smaller rim? My current WRX has TPMS and its a PITA. All of my rims have 200 dollars invested, due to TPMS alone.

TPMS will work perfectly fine once you transfer them over. If you don't want to transfer them, buy some new ones at a ridiculously overpriced cost.
