Default Trail Grappler Weight Frustrations

I had finally decided on a future wheel and tire combination for my JK. As always, I am doing a lot of research on the prospects. I finally decided on the look of the Nitto Trail Grapplers. I even planned on pulling the trigger on some 35's.

Here is my dillema. I saw where the 35 inch trail grapplers were a lot heavier per tire than even the KM2. It was not even close. Could this be correct? I was trying to keep the weight down because I really was not ready to regear yet. $$$$$$. I have the 3.73's right now and just wanted to go as long as I could on stock gears.

I wanted 17 inch rims but for the wheels I like.....they do not make 17 inch rims. That really sucks. So these will be 18 inchers. BTW....the wheels are pretty heavy too. I seached but could not find the answers I need. The questions I have are:

Does anyone know the weight of the Trail Grapplers?

Is it really that much more than most other tires like KM2, Duratracs, Goodyear MTR/Kevlar?

For those of you that have these and have had experience with other tires like the KM2, is there a big difference in the rotational mass that you can notice?

Thank you.

When I first saw the Trail Grapplers, I though they were designed after (knock off) the highly successful Toyo MT and it appears their weight is also in line with them.

If you consider one size for reference like 35x12.5x18:

KM2 67 lbs
Toyo MT 81 lbs
Trail Grappler 80 lbs (Four Wheeler mag)

If you run a SEARCH you will find a thread a few months ago with the weights of those several tires.

Just to clarify the KM2s are one of the lightest MTs around.

BTW, I know how you feel about 17" tires, I want to drop down to 17s, but the wider tires I am looking at are only available in 18".

I ran 33 inch KM2's on my last JK. I loved them. I would really like to get them again. I did a price comparison on the 2 tires(trail grappler/KM2) and actually some more. Here is what i could find in my limited searches: Remember these are for 18 inch rims.

KM2 $338.00
Trail Grappler $279.00
Durarac $309.00
Kevlars $Couldnt seem to find them for an 18 inch wheel in 35's but the 35's for a 17 inch wheel are $278.00

Here is other great news......the KM2's for 17 inch wheels are $282.00 that is a big difference just for one wheel size larger( almost 40 a tire) X 5 = $200.00.

The other tires were not as different for the 18's vs. the 17's. That is one reason I was going to get the Nittos. As you can see the price helped me decide on these.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet on the KM2's. Even though they are a lot more expensive, it could pay off in the long run. OR.....I could find a different wheel that is made in a 17 (or even lower).

You all know what it feels like to search for months, find a wheel you finally like, and be stuck when it comes to sizes.

I THOUGHT I HAD IT ALL FIGURED OUT!!

Thanks for listening

I've got some 16x8 procomp 97's and i'm looking at getting some 255/85r-16's bfg km2's ($171.73 each at discount-tires-2go). i know they are gonna be heavier, but they are only gonna go on the jeep when i go offroad. i too have the 3.73's but i think the comination isn't gonna hurt much.

what do the 315/70/17 Duratracs weigh in comparison to the others? The GY MT/R's w/ Kevlar may be the way to go for me if the Duratracs are a lot heavier?

The Duratracs are one of the lightest MT tires at 60 lbs in that size. The MTR/Ks are 68 lbs.

The bigger the rim the heavier the tyre.

KM2
35x12.5 x15= 61lbs
35x12.5 X16= 64lbs 3lbs x 4= 12lbs extra
35x12.5 x17= 68lbs 7lbs x 4= 28lbs extra
35x12.5 x20= 72lbs 11lbs x4= 44lbs extra

Really? Wow, wonder why. You would think since there is actually less tire the weight would be less.
