Default (updated)-Trying to find a noise from rear end

about 3 days ago my jeep started making a gear whining noise.I can't tell if it is comming from the rear end or the driveshaft. you can only hear it while accelerating and most noticable at low rpms.it kind of sounds like a sports bike is riding next to me. last time i went wheeling by vent tube came off my rear diff. and i'm not sure if anything got down into it. i'm going to change my fluid in my diff. this wed. but i'm not for sure if this will help. any ideas??

(edit) these are stock 4.10's and the Diff. has never been opened.

My rear-end doesn't make any whining noise...unless I eat the wrong stuf...

Seriously, Don't think you would get a whining noicse from the driveshaft so you can likely isolate this to the rear end if those are your only options based on what you experience. Driveshafts have a way of amplifying noises in connecting components...

If it's a fairly high pitched noise (it sounds like it from your description), then, it's driveshaft speed, and associated with the pinion gear. Perhaps a pinion bearing going bad. Hopefully, it's the small one, and all that will be necessary is rear driveshaft removal, knock the rear flange off, pop the seal out and you're there. If it's a lower pitch, then, it is wheel speed and associated with the ring gear. Has it just started doing this overnight? If so, I have my money on a bad bearing. You may even try checking the diff fluid and see if it's low. Could be that simple.

Let's hope the pumpkin doesn't blow up before you get to it!

man it takes a long time to drain that crud out(been draining for a good 30 min). none of the part shops around here have a gasket for the diff. I trying to drain so i can put new gear oil in it, and wed. when my lube locker gasket and rock guard get here i can open it up and clean the whole thing out and put in my synthic.

pull the cover and use brake cleaners and spray it out thoroughly. as far as gaskets go, just use rtv and save your lube locker for the next application.
