Default Two True-tracs or single ARB

Gears are going in next week. I'm going to get some kind of traction device installed while they have everything torn apart. I thought I was set on having a True-trac installed front and rear. From everything I've researched they'll do everything I need.

Talking to David at Northridge (the installer) he didn't like the idea of the TTs and recommended ARBs front and rear. I understand where he is coming from but I'm not ready to drop the extra $1000ish for the second ARB.

Being that I don't like rockcrawling (not much in the way of that in the NW anyways) and the trails I run I'd rarely have a tire off the ground, where an ARB would shine, what would you do?

A True-trac in both axles,or a single ARB in the rear.

I wheel with a guy with a true-trac and it is worthless. I rather have a real locker. Even if you don't have a tire off the ground two wheels spining is better than one. I promise the true-trac will not do that for you.

I am having the same dilemma right now since I am regearing next spring when tax return comes in providing the commies dont take all my money.

I was thinking of doing an arb in the rear and limitied slip in the front since I ahve to replace the ccarrier anyway may as well not be completly open. I ahve also toyed with the idea of putting a detroit in the rear and a limited slip up front but my jk is my dd. I wish arbs were not so much coin. I just cannot afford a regear and both front and rear arbs. If i didnt have 3.21s I would just keep saving for regear and both ARBs but I got to regear soon since my gearing is driving me crazy off road.

If I didn't drive so much on snow covered roads in the winter,I think I'd also do a Detroit locker.

The ARBs have a great reputation, but I like the idea of simple things that don't need wires and air lines to look after.

There are several other TrueTrac threads that will give more feedback, if you can find them.

As you have already found, you will get extremely negative reviews from the guys that do rocks or spend a lot of their time with one or more tires in the air. (and from guys that don't have one, and have never run one) For the rest of us, a truetrac is plenty decent, and the $390ish price sure beats a grand for a selectable. (and for those wheels-up times - add a little brake pressure to lock it up...)

I had actually just bought one to go in with a d30 re-gear. Turns out that the housing is bent, so I'm looking at a 44 upgrade and throwing the true-trac and yukon 5.13's on craigslist

You could also PM Planman. I believe he has a jeep running front and rear true-tracs, and had fairly favorable things to say about it.

right now, i have a detroit in the rear. it drives ok. its my DD. no big deal. after next weekend, i will have a detroit in the front too. everyone keeps telling me how bad its going to drive. BS. it dosent "lock" until it senses torque on the pinion. otherwise it just ratchets. yeah they click and ocassionally a kinda loud pop, but thats normal. you learn to drive it differently, like not gassing it hard in a sharp turn. gas it before the turn, coast thru the turn, gas it again after you straighten out. on the open road, cant tell its there.

my atv has a locked rear axle and detroit in the front. in 2wd, cant tell its in there. click it in 4wd and you can not stop it, it will climb a tree.

I have had truetracs in another vehicle and they were surprisingly competent. As long as you NEVER plan on doing rocks (then you will just end up spending money twice) they will be plenty fine for your needs. They hold up well, lock up extrenley tight for a LS and require no maintenance.

From a person that had Truetracs front and rear do not do it! I ended up changing out the rear to a full Detroit locker. In your case why not do a ARB or a detroit in the rear and a Truetrac in the front, you do not have to have the same in front and in the rear.

I'm a fan of automatic lockers front and rear as well.

I can't recall who I just heard say it, might have been Ivan on Extreme 4x4 now that I think about it; anyway, apparently the school of thought is shifting, and increasing numbers of enthusiasts are choosing automatic lockers up front as -more often than not- they aid in turns rather than hinder.

What did we all do before selectable lockers were invented?

Had to do over again, I'd have a Detroit in both axles.
