What parts did you replace, and did you do it yourself?

The U-Joint Cap fell off.

All you need is to get new U-joints and then replace pull the pieces apart and put it back together. It is something that could be done if you are mechanically inclined.

but the piece that's missing really isn't part of the u-joint...

The piece that's missing is the bearing, which comes with the new u-joint.
The repair is as simple as stated above only if the bore has not been damaged.

I had a stealer ship do it as I assumed it would be more than my meager mechanic skills could handle. It was bloody expensive and realizing how much I could have saved made me want to cry. Definitely give it a shot yourself

It's not as difficult as you might think, but make sure you have the right tools. I ended up installing a new on my rear drive shaft in a hotel parking lot using a large C clamp. Huge PITA but it worked.
