I've wonder that too. Here is So Cal I don't worry but up in the winter snow I've wondered if that POR-15 stuff is worth investing in. Anybody use this stuff?

Up here, all the vehicles sold have undercoating on them whether you want it or not. The dealer just charges extra for it. I do believe that it does help create a barrier, and it also helps make the ride much quieter. The down side, it tends to peel in the wheel wells as the rocks eat up at it (but those are plastic so who cares.

I have used POR-15 products and like them. They are expensive though. I just recently used the POR-15 and their Chassis Coat on my new Shrockworks bumper. I did top coat with Rustoleum Hammered paint for better looks. Also, I'm getting ready to use the left over stuff on my lawnmower deck. As far as how long it will protect I guess is up to how well the surface is prepared as per their instructions, and if subjected to a lot of dings (ie. rocks) It's a pretty tough finish though.
I work with a guy that retired from the Navy and he says they used it on the ships hulls when they came in for dry dock. That tell's me it'll hold up well.
Also, a local automotive paint supply sells the stuff and they highly recommend it.
Hope that help's.

What is undercoating? Is it just basically roofing tar? Anyone have a link to an MSDS?

I have the Por-15 product brochure and would like to do my JK. I plan on doing it right by ordering the marine clean, por-15, etc. I think there were 3 products they recommend using (Marine Clean, something else, and Por-15).

Anyone know how much of each I will need to buy to the underside of my JK 2-door????

Marine Clean
Metal Prep
Then the product itself.
Follow their instructions to a T.
The Marine Clean is strong stuff and will burn your skin. I sprayed it on a breezy day and some of the mist got on my arms and actually burnt some.
Wear disposable gloves. If it dries on your skin it (the POR-15) aint comin off till it wears off!

Don't use por15 rust preventive paint unless you are painting an already rusty surface, it needs rust to adhear to. To cover an already exsisting paint use the chassie coat product, equally tough paint. I've used both on my YJ with great success. If you go to por15.com it will give you all the info on there different products.

As far as how much to get, I did my entire YJ frame with por 15 and it took just over 1 qt (2 coats). The chassie coat is a little thicker paint and may take more.

Thanks for the help. I already do have rust on the underside. I bought it in Feb. My drive shaft was rusted about the second day I had my JK. I'll remember to wear a regulator, long sleeves, and gloves.
