Understanding Gears?
good point. i guess i just wish mopar started whoring out surplus axles BEFORE i reageared.....
if hes not worried about $ they sure are a good deal!
to regear is around 1500
2 housings 4 axleshafts should get you 400
so he gets 410 and selectable lockers for 1100 bucks
i spend too much on my jeep
i wouldnt even take my advice

That question is just as hard as licks to the center of a tootsie roll lolly pop. How long his clutch will last is still greatly affected by how he drives. The upside to not regearing is 1st gear is now a viable forward gear that dosn't beg to be bypassed. If he's not rock crawling, then wheeling will not involve nearly as much clutching. Stay in 4 lo and enjoy all the torque. With the manual tranny he gets to choose when to shift.
Teej is pointing out an opportunity to get a decent feel for the gear swap change by final drive gear selection. This is really the BEST WAY for baltchief to feel firsthand the ratio he is contemplating. commit to a tank of no more than fifth gear driving & see what that does to the mpgs.

have you guys driven a jk with 3.21s?
if you havent you should
then drive one with 3.21s and 33s
idrove one before it was regeared, its pretty bad
the v6 has way less tourque than a 4.0 so the tjs with 3.08s and 33 days are over. the jeep i drove lost 5 and 6 th gear
and you had to coax it away from an up hill start,
id be willing to bet he will double his mileage.

4.10s would be the way to go if staying at 33s. on an 07 w/ auto, 4.10s & 33s worked great and i still had use of OD. now with an 08 and 3.73, i pretty much lost OD. on the Hwy a good head wind or slight incline will drop me outta OD. sux.
but for him, 4.10s should be fine. he could find used gears on here pretty cheap.

Thanks for the replies folks. If I was just using it for a DD I would probably just keep it how I have it, but last time we went offroad I realized she just doesn't do the rocks quite as well. So I'm gonna bite the bullet and get er done....
how long is a clutch going to last taking off with 33s and 3.21s?
he knows he needs new gears he wants to know which ones
my personal opinion if i were he would be to uppgrade to the 44s from one of our sponsors, sell the parts out of his 30 44 axles and have 410s new brakes
and stronger axles.

Theres not that much difference taking of on 32"s n 3.21s (stock)

I'd be hard pressed to say the 4.0 L TJ had more torque than the 3.8 L V6.
They chart more or less in lock step (About the same) from low rpm up to around 3-4k, then the 3.8 L out performs it.
The 4.0 L engine put out like 183 hp and 231 ft/lb or torque.
The 3.8L engine put out like 205 HP and 240 ft/lb of torque.

I think either you misremember, or I do...My 2 dr TJ felt like more of a dog than my 4 dr JK....and both the TJ and JK had/have 3.73 gearing...so the difference is the engine.

And - Yes, I was trying to give him an idea of what it would feel like to do the gear swaps by doing the equivalent down shifts....as the end result/final drive ratio doewsn't care how you got there, etc...it will conceptually get the same mpg and acceleration down shifted as re-geared, so its a good way to get a real world feel for it....and make an informed choice as to if it was going to work, or not, for him.

I appriciated how you explained it.....definately helps to decide which gears I want.

So how do you think 32s and 3.73s will be with an auto?
