Upgrade Intake or Keep Stock??
Ok guys, im not trying to build a Race Car... so honestly is this even worth doing? I removed the muffler on my 2014 2dr JK from just over the rear axle... which sounds good to me and also saves a good amount of weight. Still has the stock resonator of course. Are there honestly any noticeable performance gains with these HIGH $$$$$ air intakes? I opened up the flow a little in the rear and maybe opening up the flow a little in the front will make a difference. IDK... honestly pretty skeptical about buying a 2-$300 intake that will probably not do much at all. Thoughts???????
The front end already flows as good as it can. Putting any kind of open intake under the hood only makes it more susceptible to dirt and water. A true CAI is a snorkel.

The only real boost to power on these engines is either with a programmer and putting a new tune on the vehicle, or by adding forced induction. The intake and exhaust aftermarket has more to do with sound and seat horsepower. Everything from throttle response, fuel delivery and shift points are all computer controlled.
All of the aftermarket cone filters also open up the air intake to make it less offroad capable by giving water and dirt more access to the intake. The stock intake has a cold air inlet at the top of the hood and most of the aftermarket kits open that up to suck hot air from the engine bay. If you want a cold air intake add an AEV style snorkel.

I bought a used one from a buddy for like $100 and glad I did. I would have spent more money on replacement filters now. I have to wash mine during every oil change and sometimes between, depending on how much we hang out in the dunes. My trucks air filter was trashed at 5k, so I got a washable filter for that thing too.

Thanks for the input guys... these aftermarket intakes seem more like marketing BS than functional, plus allowing more dirt and dust in while off road. And im not going to be running any kind of aftermarket tune or anything like that, i am more than happy with my motor the way it stands... it has a lot of power for my little 2 door. Thanks again
It's funny how many people buy aftermarket intakes these days. There was a time when they did improve power and response but now with all the computer modelling and stuff most automakers have the factory intake tuned quite well.

Agree....not saying you can't squeeze out an extra HP from a CAI, but it's just not worth it at all cost wise. You must like loud, cuz I pulled that exhaust off at the axle as well when experimenting with muffler, and it was way too loud for my liking. LOL.
I mean it will get loud if i hammer down on it... which i almost never do unless offroad. As far as just daily driving it i rarely go over 2300 to -2500 rpm so im ok with the sound. It is louder than most aftermarket cat backs though lol.. i'll give you that.
On my '12 JKU, I added the K&N cold air and Dynomax cat-back exhaust. I ran it on my g-tech meter for quarter mile times before and after installing the parts (3 each). The Jeep picked up 3 tenths of a second so the parts really did make a difference in a full out pull. However, I think it may have actually hurt my low end torque, or it felt that way.
Would I do it again? No. The thing sounded like a Civic with a fart pipe.
