Default Warn XD9000 Maintenance

I've acquired a used XD9000 and was about to mount it on my new bumper and mount the synthetic line when I realized that if there is any maintenance to be done... now is the time

Is there anything I should do or check before mounting and spooling it all up? The Warn website says all winches are lubricated for life and don't require servicing.

It has been tested that it works/spins on the workbench by hooking up a battery to it

And is there any benefit to moving the control box from on top of the winch to under the hood for better protection from the elements?

I just moved mine under the hood , cost me about $25 for 2 more long battery cables and I used an old extension cord for wiring up the switch. Mine kept getting wet and shorting out which would drain my battery. It likes it under the hood , nice and toasty

Wouldn't hurt to clean it up if needed. I have had my warn HS9500i hanging off the front of my vehicles, uncovered, for 13 years now with no maintenance at all. Though when I'm at the do-it-yourself car wash places, I scrub it a bit with the big soapy brush and a light rinse afterward. The sides of the drum and a few bolts are looking a little crusty, but not bad at all considering the age.

Clean the motor to get rid of the moisture and dirt. Apply oil on wire rope and hook to prevent corrosion.
