I just installed a lift. I need to grease all the applicable components:

1. Is one kind of grease better than another?

2. Should i only use white lithium grease? or will all-purpose lithium grease work just as well?

3. Can you mix greases. (white lithium with the all-purpose type?)

I can answer your questions some, but it will appear I am taking it off the deep end so hold on.

Grease is engineered for specific uses, not really a one size fits all thing. For most automotive uses, an NLGI 1 or 2 thickness is used. Grease is between 70-95% oil in a thickener, the thickener most commonly used is lithium (soap based).

2. Should i only use white lithium grease? or will all-purpose lithium grease work just as well?

As I eluded to above, grease types have a specific application, however in most non industrial situations, the items being lubricated have a much higher level of forgiveness (for lack of a better word)... this is good in that most greases will function to an acceptable standard, it is bad in that it leads people in to not understanding the true nature and design of what they use.

3. Can you mix greases. (white lithium with the all-purpose type?

You can typically mix greases that use the same thickener ie lithium. Understand that there are several thickeners used such as calcium, bentone, aluminum complexes etc that are not compatible with one another. But again, in non industrial applications it is rare to encounter grease thickeners other than lithium.

People, for the most part, view grease as some sort of voodoo. They pick a grease that apeals to them but really don't know anything about it or even what makes its magic work. Bottom line is, for your use, simply pick a proven standard in the automotive sector and use it.

 

Is it just me, or does highlighting in red on black not work well?
Good info on the grease. Certain greases used on aircraft, when mixed, turn to hard clay.
