What are the odds?
What are the odds that i can get a broken bolt out of the shifter base? This started as me just investigating why i have some play in my shifter. i tried to pull off the shift knob and the whole shifter came flying off. So i took off the boots, outer and inner, and discovered that this bolt was broken and thats why my shifter is loose. I also noticed that the insulation is half missing from between the trans and body. The only work this jeep had done is a head replacement under warranty, i bet the dealership mechanics broke that shit and never replaced it. but anyway, what are my chaces of getting that broken bolt out?
I was just looking at your picture after it finally loaded on the computer. I would look at using an easy out or screw extractor. Basically you will use the drill bit that is associated with the extractor and drill into the broken bolt. Then you will use a hammer and gently tap the screw extractor in and while loosening the bolt keep tapping. Do not apply too much pressure or you can break the screw extractor which then you will be literally screwed.
I'm trying to remember exactly how that all goes together. Pictures from a different angle, and of the lever, might help. I am referring to this diagram, also.

But, a suggestion for you to consider: Use a die grinder to cut a slot in the top of the broken screw (is that item 3 in the drawing?). Then use a screwdriver to back it out.

A machine shop is a good option if you can get a machinist and the Jeep together. You might call and see if one would come to you. Undoubtedly they have jobs on assemblies that can't be moved on occasion.

Good to hear. Just remember not to over tighten it when you put it back together. The shifter is suspended by a rubber bushing to dampen vibrations, since there is no linkage, so it will always feel somewhat loose.
