what winch is right for me?
Hey guys and girls, im making the step in buying my first winch...but I do not know where to startt. I know I want a synthetic rope ( for weight purposes) and thats all I really know...looking for the most power at the most affordable rate., the most bang for my buck. It wont be used a lot to be honest mabey a couple pulls per year but help me out guys! I know we got some experts out there
I have the vr 10,000 by warn with cable but they have one with rope as well. I wanted a wench that i can count on when i need it most. I am very happy with it. I choose cable because where i wheel it won't get cut. Everyone here on the forum will have their choices for one reason or another there are a lot of choices.good luck
We went with the Warn VR8000 and the Smittybilt XRC-8 Comp. Both have the rope instead of cable and we've never had a problem. The rope saves about 25 lbs off the front of the vehicle and is much safer and easier to use.
The Warn has a better line speed than the Smittybilt.

I've got an older Superwinch 9.5i with rope on my LJ, it gets used and abused more than 30 times a year, my daughter who goes with me loves to get stuck, so well use it several times a trip. I'll probably go with the new Talon series on the JK we just bought. But, I've noticed they aren't the bargain they were a few years ago.
I just bought my 12.5 talon superwinch on Friday. Looks better than warn IMO and works just as well for 600 cheaper than a powerplant. And yeah yeah the powerplant has a compressor whatever. I don't need it.
Search "Recon Winch" on youtube google and on here. See if it's something you would buy.

My advice is to purchase the best winch you can afford. I had a Warn 8274 for 34 years on another 4x4 and it never failed me so I put a 9.5cti on the Jeep when it was new. When you need a winch, you really need one that will work every time.
All winches are not created equal therefore the spread in price. Some rated for "occasional" use, some don't have series wound motors, line speeds vary by price. If you want a really good winch be prepared to pay good money. All will eventually need maintenance so buy one that you can get parts for repair, otherwise you have a disposable winch.
