Will a 35" fit on the tail gate without a spacer?

Depends what your wheel backspacing is.

I just installed the Rugged Ridge Tire Carrier Spacer to accommodate for my new 35x12.5 on a stock Rubicon wheel and I think it will work fine for the summer until I get my new bumpers:

It has a disclaimer telling you not to go larger than 33, but I'm sure that is just because of the weight rating for the stock gate (which I know I am exceeding). As far as clearance is concerned, it works great with the 35.

I'm probably going to rig up some type of bumper mounted support to take some of the weight and to keep the tire from flexing back and forth on the bracket too much. I can see how the added backspacing puts a wicked amount of torque on the stock gate.

Do you have any pictures from the side? I'd like to see how far out it sticks but nobody has any pics from the side.

I went out and looked at mine today. I have a 35" Toyo MT on a Pro Comp rim with 4.75" backsapcing. I don't have a bracket and it fits fine. The bumper actually prevents the tire from flexing the gate. There isn't any extra room and it works out perfectly.

im using the stock wheels and 35's no spacer, and stock carrier on the gate, had to modify the plastic rear bumper. measured the cut out from a teraflex rr bumper someone had on display. taped off the measurements on th plastic bumper. i didn't cut the area closest to the body but only on the front and top so it looks like this \_________/ and badabing it fit on very tight up against the 3rd brake light no sag issues yet and i've been running it like that for a year. Also since the plastic is hollow gives you a handy little place to put small things inside the bumper that you don't want in the JK I've even used it for dirty diapers inside ziplock bags while out on the trail ... no stinky up the Jeepy.
now hopefully ill have the $$$ to get my body armor rr bumper in tire carrier in the next couple months
