I have a friend that is upgrading to the Pro Rock 44 on his Rubicon and is going to sell the empty one to me. The only thing it's going to come with is ball joints. Nothing else. He is using all the other stuff in the Pro Rock.
I already told him I'm buying it but neither of us know what it would be worth... So what's an empty D44 front housing worth?

For comparison, brand new front rubi44's are a bit over $900.
Are you doing any/all of the work yourself? Add up the costs and see what it's worth to you, but, I wouldn't pay more than a few of the cases of beer mentioned above.
Why? Because I can't weld, and don't trust myself to set up gears. So I would be paying for an empty housing, ALL internals + gear setup (have you priced lockers lately? $1400ish for the rubi locker, $1700+ for the 35sp ARB & shafts), and then gussets/sleeves/truss/skids/HD mounts + ALL of the associated labor costs. Everyone will have their own opinion, but to me, it just ends up a little too close to a built aftermarket 44.

Are you saying a fully built Rubi D44 front is over $900 or just the housing?
You might be able to use some of this as a guideline: I bought a near new fully built (gears, locker, shafts) for $1500. It had just over 1000 miles on it, previous owner bought a PR44.
I've seen fully built D44's go for around $1000. I'd consider that a good price if it included everything and in good shape.
So for just the housing with no locker or gears? I'd say maybe $500 - $700 depending on condition. Does it at least come with an aftermarket diff cover? That's worth $100 or so. No gussets or sleeve?

JKI am a fabricator/hobby machinist so I wont be spending money on buying pre-made sleeves/gussets. And I have set plenty of gears in my day to be able to save some money there as well. Not to mention a hookup for lockers and axles.
Its out of a '13 Rubi with 6k on the ticker and instead of spending money on upgrading the factory 44 he is upgrading to the PR. So no sleeves or gussets, but I can take care of that. But it does come with a diff cover.... So thats a plus.
