Exclamation What's making this NOISE?

My Jeep makes this noise only when in reverse. Usually it will only make the noise when it's cold. Any ideas what would cause this? (the creaking noise, not the brakes squeaking...)

It sounds more like a vibrating noise then a creaking noise, have hit your exhaust or modified it at all.

If you can get a hold of someone you trust and a creeper have them backup SLOWLY and see if you can locate it.

if you have an auto tranny it sounds like the cross member brace is hitting the exhaust in the middle. I have to pull mine off and beat it straight with a hammer ever once in a while.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to take it in next week sometime.

I had my wife back it out while I stood in front of it and opened the hood. I couldn't hear it from outside, but she said she heard it from the inside. I would think that might be the tranny as you mentioned.

I left the e-brake off and will try it a few days without it just in case that's it.

its not the tranny but the brace hitting your exhaust crossover. You should be able to crawl underneath and look at the exhaust crossover and see where there is contact on the crossover.

I was out wheelin and heard the same noise from my jeep. My rear driveshaft was hitting the Evap skid plate. I guess I hit the skid plate and it was bent enough to come into contact with the plastic boot on the rear drive shaft. I ended up cutting off the boot and bending back the skid plate.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to check this. Was yours only making the noise when in reverse?

I thought the DS might be the problem -- My boot was torn about a year ago so I thought it was finally on its way out. I actually had a spare DS, so had it changed a few weeks ago. The noise didn't change with the un-damaged DS though.

Mine makes the same noise only it does it only in the cold as well and when I soon my tires in reverse not when I'm slowly backing up I thought about the drive shaft as well as I have a lift and stock driveshaft. Due to the cold I haven't crawled under it yet and check it out.

Do you wheel it? I haven't figured out the problem yet, but figure it might be something I damaged wheeling...

Probably going to take it in to the dealer next week. I'm due for a maintenance (pre-paid) oil change.
