Angry Wheel bearing failure

I just had ARB lockers installed in me 07 X at a local shop. When I picked it up and attempted to drive home the right rear wheel completely locked up at 70 mph!!! As soon as I got to the shoulder (and the seat cushion out of my butt) I called the service manager at the shop and told him what happened. He told me to bring it back since I hadn't even made it 10 miles down th road. I tried to limp back on side streets but decided to have them tow it back after less than a mile. When they got it on the lift the right wheel bearing was completely destroyed along with the axle and brake rotor. The manager said that the rear differential had not been completely filled with oil when it was put back together. What I don't understand is why did only the right bearing fail? They checked the left one and it looked fine and fluid was running out when they pulled the axle. I suspect the bearing might have been damaged on install. Any ideas???

Obviously this is not a mileage issue. The brake destrution seems a bit unusual though. low grease would not cause that, but a failed brake/esp system locking up the brake and overheating the disc then the bearing would seem more likely.

Might be best to let them worry about it.

Angry Re: wheel bearing failure

It only has forty six hundred miles on it! The reason the rotor got trashed is from pieces of the fragged bearing getting caught up against it and the brake caliper.

Talking Running

Update: Well, after getting new wheel bearings, right axle and brake rotor I'm finally back up and running again. Took it out and put around 100 miles on it with no troubles today. Also played with the new lockers! Can't wait for safari week!!!
All that's left now is talking them in to giving me a deal on new tires! I had a buddy tried to balance the one that was on the right rear and it's got a flat spot the size of my hand! I was thinking about putting KM2's on it anyway. Maybe I'll talk them in to discounting me a set considering they almost got me KILLED!!!

Thanks for all your imput!

I'd say if their screwup wore down your tire that much, you shouldn't have too much problem talking them into that.
