Default wheel offset?

So I am getting ready to pull the trigger on a set of pro comp series 7033 wheels but in a 17x9 wheel I have seen several different offsets. What does his mean, I understand backspacing and so forth but am kinda perplexed by offset. Some have a -6 mm offset and others have a 0mm offset. HELP me unstupify my brain lol

Scroll down to the rim diagram. It will explain everything very well.

I have a mental block with offset also. This should help.

Thanks to both of you who responded to this thread, as I have always had a misconception of the two. This explained it well and I now know what is going on.

THANKS you guys are awesome!!!!! Totally makes sense now. So would u all agree that a closer to zero offset would allow for a much stronger and centered wheel or is it purely from an aesthetic standpoint.
