The cheap 'n nasty ones that just slip over the lugs can be dangerous as they don't leave enough of the thread exposed at the end of the lug to torque up the bolts properly. The proper ones that actually bolt on to the hub lugs and then have their own lugs fitted to hang the wheel on are safe, but the bolts need to be re-torqued periodically.

You'll get both sides of the argument as to whether they are safe or not. They are illegal in some states. All the brands I have seen are "off-road use only". You have to read up and decide for yourself.. You also need to consider that with steel wheels you can buy a new set of wheels with proper backspacing for just a little more than "good" spacers will cost you...

X2. Spacer problems on the highway are like crash landings at airports - one time is unacceptable.

Another consideration is that some tire shops will not touch a vehicle with spacers. I like the free nationwide balance & rotate I get from Discount Tires, so wouldn't want to blow it by adding spacers.

There are a couple of threads floating around here somewhere with a lab analysis of the spidertrax spacers, and one other brand that I don't recall the name for.

SpiderTrax are very popular around here.

However, when you consider that a set of (4) spacers will run you around $200.00 you could apply that money toward a set of steel wheels with correct backspacing for just a few bucks more.

Decisions, decisions.....

On another note, I bought a set of used spidertrax spacers. When I finally got my wheel/tire combo I was able to sell them for the same amount I bought them for.

What is the proper backspacing for aftermarket rims in size 17? I am currently using my stock 17's with 285's and just bought new spacers from spidertrax but might consider just getting new rims and selling the spacers.

As long as they are properly installed and torqued they are safe. You should check and re-torque every time you rotate and balance. I run spidertrax on stock wheels with no problems. Don't cheap out on spacers go with a reputable product

X2 what Ryan just said. Keep them properly torqued and they are fine.
I ran Spidertrax spacers with the factory 17" alloys for over a year - about 20k miles highway and moderate wheeling with no problem whatsoever. It is true that some tire shops will not work with them so it all depends where you go. Mom and pop shops less likely to even mention anything over a chain, but if you have a deal like nthinuf with Discount Tire, than its something to consider.

old pic with spacers, factory wheels and 33's
