i just regeared mine last month. 08 jku auto with 3.73's. went to the 5.13. night and freakin day difference on and off road. i agree with the dirtman, it's the best mod i have done to my jk. i only wish that i had done it at the same time that i changed out my tires, but i couldn't afford it then. again, best mod EVER!

My 4.88s were $1000.00 out the door. Here is my jeep with 33s and the Tf 2.5" coil lift with an added 1" spacer up front to level it out.

I probably paid more due to the lockers install at the same time.

I'm wondering how everyone picked their new gearing?? Original poster is talkin' 4.10 gears, 2 others 4.88's and another 5.13's. I know auto vs Stick is a factor, but you only want to regear once, right? Which gearing gives a lifted, 35'ed automatic the best out of it's 3.8 liter engine?

Not trying to T/J, just adding to the original question.

Shorter, bud. For example 5.38 is shorter than 4.10. Bonneville racers use really tall gears. And "lower gears" are higher numerically. Just so we're on the same page. Cool?

5.13 is probably the most popular, but cases can be made for both 4.88 and 5.38. (I have tried both 5.13 and 5.38, and prefer the 5.38s. No chance that I would be happy with 4.88.) But, factor in the model, the extra drag from being lifted, the bigger heavier tires, any added weight from armor/winch/bumpers/carriers, altitude, hills/mountains or flat sea level freeways, specific tire and wheel used (as there can be a considerable difference in height and weight), intangibles like personal opinion, and so on.

ex -
2door, soft top, stock everything, flat roads, and he chopped the flares to fit 35's,.
4door, hard top, lifted, heavy bumpers/winch/armor, at altitude with lots of elevation changes.

Assuming the exact same tire, will both of these auto's have the same gearing needs?

^he's right. I got 5.38's and loving my new power boost and gas mileage. Before I was so sluggish up hills/mountains, slow to accelerate onto the freeway and from red light. Best mod I've done so far by far
