Why does that extra 1/2" change everything?

Default Why does that extra 1/2" change everything?

From all of the people thus far who have installed 2.5 suspension lifts or BBs practically none of them complain about handling issues that would require adjustable arms/track bars to fix. Why is it that when you step into the 3" category adjustable everything is so much more important? The reason why I ask this is because very few people offer a 2.5" suspension lift. In fact I am pretty sure only Skyjacker does. Is it because if someone is going to lift it 2.5" they mine as well just go 3"? Seems like too many problems involved with that jump, but maybe the after market support doesn't see it that way...

I vaguely remember reading on here that the 2.5 BB actually measures out to just 2......I think. I know that sounds crazy, but that answer just keep gnawing at me. It would then make sense why you wouldn't need an arm for the "2.5" but you would for the 3" lift.

Please, somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I don't like to post something If it shows I'm totally ignorant. Ahhh it wasn't that funny.

I need to just go to bed. *yawn* Night.

I think that's a good point... The actual lift a kit gives you is certainly something to take into a consideration, but if we look at the difference between say a FT 3" lift and a Skyjacker 2.5" what are we going to find? I guess everyone makes springs a little different and so one may be softer/lower than another.... IGOFISHN has a 2.5" Skyjacker with 3/4 spacers and still claims the ride is great on his 35s (great set up btw IGOFISHN). I think this really boils down to two things.... One being our own personal preferences/sensitivities to handling. The other being .5-1" of difference may sound small, but even that amount of change can have an impact on suspension our suspension geometry... Anyways still thinkin about it. All input is appreciated!

I recall hearing of a few. Have also heard people with 3" lift and no complaints.

no matter what lift you get, I would suggest a SkyJacker steering stabilizer. They are only 36 bucks from Quadratec and I have a 2.5" Teraflex bb with 33"s and my front end was all over the place even after alignment, but I put on the steering stabilizer today and I can tell a huge difference. Plus I have to turn off my ESP to keep from pulling me side to side, but that could be b/c my tires are a little out of balance I think. Hope that helps some. but I would say for a 2" or 2.5" lift, no extra parts besides the steering stabilizer are needed.

the lift itself and the components will all vary in heights depending on manufacturer, and also, think about it. half an inch, when discussing suspension geometry, is huge. people win olympic events by less.

Here is another. Dartiness, wandering, call it what you like. If you are cruising down the freeway and you're darting, I would guess you are wandering too!

I had a 2" Superlift budget boost installed on my Unlimited X. It seems a little "darty" but steers great with no wandering. Installer missed on centering the steering wheel and I am anal about that (Monk Syndrome I guess) so I tweeked it myself. I was wandering if with this amount of boost should I need to have the caster adjusted to get rid of the dartiness (is that a word?) or just leave it alone?
Thanks,
Jim

This is true. I haven't had any issues with wandering or control. My ESP has never came on. I really haven't done anything different than anybody else. I just made sure everything was really tight when I installed my lift. I also made sure my toe in was set between 1/16 and 1/8 inch. The only thing I am going to change is the rear track bar baracket. People have had too many problems with the bracket being torn off the axle.

I have the 2.5" tera lift and can't say I have any serious problems. I do wander or dart a little. However, I didn't notice any difference when I put the lift on. The wandering became most noticable when I put my tires on before the lift. The wandering in the JK is much less than the wandering in my old YJ so I hardly notice it. My wife on the other hand complains about it a little. I think I will probably get the upper control arms sometime and see if I can adjust it enough to curb the wandering a little. I am thinking about a better steering stabilizer too.

Just so everyone knows, the tera spacers measure exactly 2.5 inches. The lift once installed was also 2.5 inches. I don't think that another half inch would cause the jeep to handle much different.

Just my thoughts,

Bryan

The OME lift will probably clear 35s without the Revteks. 2" is all you need for 35s under a JK.

I am one of those with a 2.5" bb and no complaints, in fact I think it handles the same as it did stock with one exception, body roll. I can tell now that the center of gravity is higher it rolls a bit more in the corners than it did before the lift and tires but its minor. I also don't have the wandering issues that some do. In fact, on the highway at 70 mph I can take my hands off of the wheel and my jeep tracks straight down the road. The highways around here are in pretty good shape so that helps and if the roads were worse it might affect things differently.
