Default why long arm for smaller lifts?

i was just wondering why a long arm system is needed or wanted for a smaller lift such as 3.5, i thought at the very lowest a longarm was needed at 4 to correct geometry.

It isn't needed for 3.5" lifts but it does improve ride quality from what I have gathered.
