Default Winch - direct to batt or relay + switch?

Hi everyone,

I've seen a few winch installs that had a switch in the cabin to 'turn on the winch'. I guess this means the winch is connected to a high amp disconnect like this one?

painlessperformance.com/webcatalog/largeview.php?SearchField=30204

Is there any advantage to doing it this way instead of connecting the winch directory to the battery?

Thanks!
js.

No advantage that I am aware of. I've always run it directly to the battery, I'm pretty sure the solonid box (internal or external) has a relay switch built in.

I had an incab controller on my TJ but the winch was still connected directly to the battery.

I'd rather have an extra relay that can only come on via a switch that is wired to the ignition... That way you have to have the key on before you can even think of sending power to the winch... No one can Muck w/you and/or your winch while your're parked somewhere w/your vehicle unattended.

ya and when your ignition is dead due to a roll over or water you can't winch out

waste of time and money. Just connect it to the battery.
If you are worried about "security" then put a hidden waterproof switch under the hood that interupts the power wire for the CONTROLER.

Seems like you got bigger problems if that's the case... The time and [small] amount of money it took to do it 'right' would be the least of your concerns at that point
