Default Winches

Ok so I'm looking into getting a winch really soon for my JK. I already have it picked out I just have two questions..

1.When winching yourself out of somewhere, what do you put your transmission in? (Auto)

2.When winching someone else out, what should your transmission be in?

I would also guess you'd want the engine to be on to not drain the battery when winching. Any other helpful comments are appreciated!

my Smittybilt winch manual says to place transmission in Neutral and apply hand break. I am new as well and learning something new every time I am on this board.

Check out the off-road 101 section, lots of helpful info in there.
