Question Which Winter Snow tire?

I'm looking at 2 tires on TreadWright. I'm also debating on getting them with the Kedge-Grip or getting them Siped.

Gaurd Dog M/T 235/85/16 measuring in at 32" x 9" ... $519.72 shipped to house (with Kedge-Grip)

I'm a poor college student and my Stock SR-A tires are getting low and I know how horrid they are in ice, snow, and slush.

Thanks for the advice.

Get a set of Duratracs and you'll be set for a very very long time.

If you're intent on sticking with the Treadwrights, I would go for the guard dogs with the Kedge.

I can't get Duratracs 'cause they are $75 more expensive per tire. It'd take me an extra month to save up for them, by then worst part of winter would be over.

Does TX really get that much snow?

And the stock SR-A tires are about 32" tall, so the guard dogs would be a closer match to the stock size.
You like them narrow? I would recommend the 265/70R17 Guard Dogs. They are a litte more wide than stock.
Here are 265/70R17 BFG AT on my dad's 100% stock rubicon.

Last couple years We've gotten a bit of snow. And I drive a bit in the mountains. I'm not getting spacers so I don't want to get the wider tires.

Discount tire has 235/85/16 General Grabber AT 2's for $152 each, free shipping.

A) you won't be buying retreads.

B) it's a FANTASTIC all terrain in the snow/ice

C) you'll have an all terrain tire you can run year round.

I replaced my stock SR-As with Duratracs. Even though the 265/70R17 Duratracss I installed are technically supposed to be smaller than the 255/75R17 SR-As, they're almost the exact same height as a brand new SR-A. The previous owner didn't rotate his spare, so I had a good tire to compare it to.

Anyway, the Duratracs will handle great in just about any conditions. Well, if you want them to handle good on ice, you'll have to install studs. And there aren't quite enough voids to deal all that well with really deep and sloppy mud. Aside from that, their only weak spot is potentially the sidewalls. If you do a lot of crawling through extreme rock gardens with lots of sharp edges on the rocks, you might cut a sidewall if you're not careful. Other than that, they'll handle pretty much any terrain you throw at 'em with no problems at all, including snow. And if you rotate them regularly, they last a good long time. People here have been getting 50,000+ miles.

The Duratracs aren't very cheap though. I paid $220 per tire for mine. If you look for it though, you can find various rebates. Goodyear is offering a $40 rebate when you buy 4 right now. Tread Lightly offers a $100 rebate when you buy 4 as well (might not be compatible with the Goodyear rebate). And if you order from Discount Tire Direct, they'll give you $50 off the total if you buy 5.

Are you looking for a

Winter Snow tire?
that is not

horrid in ice, snow, and slush
or an aggressive offroad tire?

If you want something a bit less aggressive, and better on slick roads, look for closer lugs and more siping. Nitto Terra grapplers are decent and semi aggressive for an AT, and quite a bit less than duratracs the last I looked. The Falken Wildpeak/Rocky Mountain is more of an AT, but has great reviews both on and off road. Plenty of options out there, just depends on what you want.
