We were debating between ProComp Xtreme AT 33's and 35's. For 35's, our local shop said we would need a 4.5" lift to safely handle any off-roading. I didn't want to spend that kind of money, so we settled on 2.5" ProComp lift and 33's. Got home and realized they put on 35's with the 2.5" lift. I love they way it looks, but we're total newbies and don't know if the 35's will create any other problems. Specifically, should we be worried about off-roading problems, re-gearing (curent ratio is 3.73) or using the stock spare tire carrier? Anything else that you think needs to change or we should worry about with this set up? We don't plan on doing any extreme off-roading but would like to get out there on light to moderate trails.

 

With a 2.5" lift, 35's fit quite easily. With the right 2.5" lift, you can even fit 37's under it without much difficulty, although there is creative trimming that needs to be done, as well as getting the correct amount of bump stop. I'd just leave the 35's on there. If you're in a 2012+ with the 3.73's, you might feel a little sluggish, but certainly not a complete turd. You may consider jumping up to at least 4.10's, or even 4.56's in the future, unless you eventually plan to go bigger (37+) in which case you'd want 4.88's. As far as the carrier, you can get by with the cheap Smittybilt, or go big and get something like a GenRight.

You're certainly not going to hurt anything by running 353's with w 2.5" lift, though. I'm on 37's with a Rock Krawler 2.5" lift and have no trouble at all.

 

I have always been told that you can run a 35 with a 2.5" lift. That is my setup and I am happy with it. You should be ok, especially since you said you will be doing only moderate trails.

Drive it around and go on the freeway. Then you will know if you can live with the decrease in power. I have the 3.8 and 4.10 and it's not bad.

As for the stock carrier, that is up to what you feel comfortable with. It may possibly damage the spot welds on the tailgate. I have seen A LOT of opinions and speculation and just a little proof of damage. Make sure the tire at least sits very snug and presses against the carrier/tailgate. I am running this for now and taking the risk.

I've been running 35's on my '12 since October of 2011 with no problems. I have a 2.5" Teraflex coil lift and 3.21 gears so you should be good with 3.73 gears. I ran the stock carrier up to April of this year with no problems except extra rattles on dirt roads. I put on a Poison Spyder tramp stamp to fit my cargo carrier on for vacation and haven't put the tire back on yet. No problems with rubbing or anything, but of course there aren't many rocks down here in South GA. Congrats on the new purchase. It looks great.

 

I really hate posting links to other threads but I find I am doing this a lot lately due to the same questions being asked over and over. For a newbie, this FAQ is a great place to start. It's not the end all answers for everything as people are very creative and can make pretty much any setup work if you put enough effort into it....and perhaps a sawzall helps too.. Anyway....start here and yes, you will be totally fine with the 2.5" lift and 35's......well...you may have other issues to deal with but now we are getting into a lot of info concerning driveshafts, caster and other alignment issues, axle reinforcements, etc...

Sounds like the shop you went to doesnt work on JK's much. 2 1/2 to 3 is pretty standard for 35's. A lot of people are running 40's on 4 to 5 inches of lift.

Keep the 35s on. I ran a 2" lift and only added 2" bump stops and 1.5" wheel spacers and everything fit fine and wheeled sufficiently at the time.
