Default Xenon flares - help?

HI all,

I have been trying to fit some Xenons onto my Rubi but I'm having a terrible job getting them mounted up at the front. There are 3 holes which go through a "support" - ((big flat plate which mounts under the moulded flares) and then through the fender and then into the metal body panel.

The holes don't seem to line up very well and it's almost impossible to get the bolts through the support, the fender and the metal body panel. I can actually get it all just about lined up with a heap of trouble bu thyen I can't get the nut to take at the back (tight space) before it all springs apart - what am I doing wrong? Any tips?

(I'm talking about the three longer bolts here - the other 6 went in perfectly.)

Thanks,

Steve

Use a pair of needle nose pliers to hold the nuts in the back( tight space) to get them started.

Also, the kit I got came with longer bolts, but I went and bought some a bit longer.

If I do that, how do I locate the washer at the back. I'm not sure I can hold the nut and the washer with the pliers all lined up at the same time though.

Thanks for the very quick reply BTW - this forum still amazes me.

Yea the first time you do it. There a PITA. You'll get it. And a tip, that metal is soft. I pulled on it and flexed it somewhat to make the task easier

I don't remember if I even put washers on mine.

I was trying to preserve the paint around the holes on the thin sheet metal work. - that's a bit of a long shot I think as struggling with the bolt knocked the paint off the edges of the hole. I have put a little spot of grease on there to try and delay the onset of rust (I'm planning on keeping this Jeep for a good long time).

I just went and put a spot of superglue on the washers and "tacked" the nuts to them so I'll see if that does it - at least they'll be stuck together so I can try for the pliers technique tomorrow.

I'm done for today though so I'll let you know how it went after I finish tomorrow.

One the plus side I successfully installed the backs and also a Tuffy cover which secures the Mygig which was neat (well-made and easy enough to fit).

A CAI went on in about 40 minutes as well - so not too bad a day for modding although I was hoping to get the flares done as well.

Thanks,

Steve

Good idea with the glue. The needle nose will fit right in there. I struggled awhile, then went needle nose to the rescue! Congrats on your other mods.

I used a magnet to hold the washer and nut in place. Make sure those three bolts are the first ones you put on, but don't tighten them until all the nuts and bolts are threaded in place.

O.K. I got it done. Thanks for all of the hints. In the end there were a couple of things that helped.

I used a tiny spot of superglue to tack the washer to the nut - that enabled me to hold it int he end of a ring spanner which made it all go a lot more smnoothly.

The main thing that helped was that I took a dremmel cutting whell and trimmed a little piece of the fender where it passes over the original welded baracket which supported the original fender. Turns out that this made it much easier to manouever. I took some pictures and I'll post those up to the write-up later with a few hints when I have some more time.

Thanks,

Steve
