Your Favorite Game : What's That Sound (Tailgate knocking sound)
For a while now, I have a random knock coming from my tailgate. it sounds like a large flat bar knocking inside the tailgate. And I'm sure we've all had something like this, it's driving me crazy...
What's that sound coming from the Jeep JK Tailgate - YouTube
It happens in that youtube video at 4s and 9s ....
Few things: It's not the 35" tire on the back... if I take it off, the knock is still there.
I've emptied out the entire Jeep, it's not the strap downs or the factory scissor jack... it's inside the tailgate.
I have this installed : MBRP Inc. 130903 - Off Camber Fabrications Spare Tire Reinforcement Kit for 07-10 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec And i did drop one of the tack-welded nuts down there, and I recovered it after this knock started.
it happens on small bumps, or even if I tape the brakes... I figure this means the 'flat bar' is sitting verticle, and falling foward. The video is traveling 25-30mph, with my iphone recording by reaching back from the driver seat.
As you can tell, it's not always a single knock.
The tailgate seems to have a 'channel' at the bottom where the metal pieces fold together that I can't get inside.
Any ideas?

It sounds like the latching mech is binding as the tailgate and body are flexing. Check to see if the tailgate latch is aligning properly. Look for signs of misalignment on the striker (paint missing, rub marks) You can also check by wrapping the tailgate latching mech with black electrical tape to isolate any metal on plastic contact and see if the sound disappears or lessons some. May need to adjust the tailgate some to bring it back to alignment. All the added weight to the rear tailgate can cause misalignment over time......
I believe mine's also from 3/4 of the way towards the hinged side :\
Glad it's not just me.
Didn't work :\
