Default Yukon Zip Locker

I am installing a Yukon Zip Locker with Motive Gear 5.13 Ring and Pinion in my 2007 wrangler unlimited rear Dana 44. However, I've used all the shims that came with it and still have play left and right. I was able to get the backlash to .005 but still need to put more shims in to increase the preload. Also, the zip locker seal housing on the right has so many shims between it and the carrier that it looks like its hanging off the right side of the carrier that you can actually see one of the seal rings. I haven't hooked it all up yet to see if it leaks but was wondering if anyone else has had this problem of not enough shims and the seal housing issue.

Kurt,

you want to get the preload first then set the backlash. The carrier should take considerable effort to get it in the housing. Once you have that take shims from one side and install them on the other side until you get .006 - .-010" if I remember correctly. Always use the existing shims to set the backlash or it will change the preload setting. Are you sure the pinion depth is correct in relation to the axle centerline? That is the most critical measurement. i hope this helps some.

I think I figured out the issue but don't know why or if it is supposed to be like this. The housing bearings and races that came with the zip locker are significantly thinner than what was on the stock carrier. Because of this it is requiring significantly more shims to get the carrier to not have any play left to right. Like I mentioned I used every shim that came with the zip locker including the master shims and it still doesn't fit tight into the housing. I'll attach a pic of the new race compared to the stock race.
