Default Chincoteague anyone?

Any info? I am planning to go for a week in September and would love to hear from someone that has been there as far as rules, permits for beach driving is concerned.

We planed to go to Ocracoke, but this will save a few hours travel.

Thank

I have been down to Assateague a couple times - most recently a couple months ago with the JK. I guess a lot depends on what you want to do down there. There is info about permits at - http://www.assateagueisland.com/isla...ach_travel.htm - I went ahead and got the yearly permit. I think there is like 18 miles of beach and it is great for fishing. Direct link to map: http://www.assateagueisland.com/map/map21.htm.

There are some existing threads on the forum with mentions of Assateague:

I would also scour some local club sites because they have runs and info on rides down there include pics: core4x4.org, marylandjeepclub.org, offcambercrawlers.com, marylandrockraiders4x4club.com, marylandcreepers.com, virginia4x4.org, easternshorejeep.com

This thread on the MD jeep club had some info about chincoteague / Assateague:
http://www.marylandjeepclub.org/phpB...t=chincoteague

Sorry I don't have more specific info - but I am sure you will find it. Maybe post on the east coast board as well.... I look forward to seeing the pics! I am planning a camping trip down there with my family to the state park this fall...

I was at Assateague 3 weeks ago and had a great time. It's great to drive all your stuff onto the beach and not have to drag it a half mile in the sand. We did not drive on Chincoteague as the OHV area was and is most likely still closed for bird nesting. All the info you need is on this link to the National Park Service. http://www.nps.gov/asis/planyourvisit/osv.htm

Default Chincoteague & Assateague

Actually the OSV area is on Assateague Island, but there are 2 parts. Maryland has more surf fishing beach access (12 - 16 miles), the VA section has some to at Tom's Cove.
I've only been on Assateague (10 years ago & again today) and I'm going back tomorrow. JKL Rubi did fine, I didn't even need to air down the tires until I stopped to fish. A few waves broke over the berm and got the tires a little wet.
The engine got bogged down a little when backing up to the edge, so I dropped it in 4-lo and hit the lockers. It was no problem I don't think the lockers had fully engaged by the time I stopped (still blinking). In the picture you can see how the tires dug-in just a little.
I think the Mud Tires tried to dig through the sand instead of floating over it, and the skinny 10" width tires had us bouncing side-to-side in the ruts. As soon as these tires are worn-out I'm getting a good set of wide floatation tires.
We didn't catch anything, but we had fun fishing, flying kites, boogie boarding with the kids while Mrs. read a book.
Assateague is a great place to get away from it all. Just bring a FULL can of Bug Spray.

Here are the minimum regs:
12"x12" jack stand support (5/8" plywood, or 1/4 steel)
18"x6" folding shovel or better
16' tow strap (with anchor points on your rig) no hooks
air pressure gauge ( I ran 32 down the beach to 'the spot' & 17 pounds back to beach-head with no problems)
7+" of ground clearance (no Suburus here pal)
Read the Assateague reccomendations as well.

Josephus, thanks for the response and yes, I ran into these bugs on the Jersey shore.

What about permits? I still like the Outer Banks, not many restriction there except the obvious, like equipment. At least one has not to deal with nesting areas.

I still have some time to make up my mind.

CHOPPER: Like you, I too have a bike (GW), how do you decide, on a nice day, what to use?
