help with trails
Unfortunately, just about every trail in MA and CT are private. Best to either look to join a club or wait until someone in one of the forums plans a group run at one of the few public places. In the areas you are asking about, I am not aware of any public trails but a few private ones.
I tried to start a club back when i had my xj but every one rather havekeggers at the shop i had indteaf of trying to get more ppl i once had as written ok letter to go to power lines in ct but the first time we went out we had 58 jeeps/trucks and the police looked at the paper that a cl&p singed and rilpped it up told is to leave
Starting a new club is only part of the battle. getting access to legal land is the other part. You either need to own land directly, make deals with landowners or make deals with states and/or local municapalities to get access. For most new clubs, this is not easy. However, all that work has been done by other organizations like the NEA (Northeast Association of 4wd Clubs) who pretty much have access to a ton of both private and state owned land. Clubs that are members of the NEA can then get access to that land. I don't know the procedures for joining the NEA but I know there is a trial period and you have to be voted in and pay membership dues (i.e. the club).
Is it worth it? YES!!! If you want to wheel in New England and live in MA, CT or RI, you basically need to either have several hnundred acres of your own land or be in a club associated with the NEA or similar organization.
People in NH, Maine and VT have better deals because of the class VI roads and other trails that are more public. However, even though these roads are public, they are not well publicized and the people that have the maps usually want to meet you and take you out on a run to make sure you aren't looking to tear things up.
If you have any desire to check out NH trails, there is a website called exploringNH where they organize trail runs and, assuming you follow the rules, they will give you maps to these trails. I haven;t done one yet but I know people that have and they say its worth it.
