How come no one is talking about the destruction of Little Sluice that's happening tomorrow? Other boards are posting. Check it out.

The goal is to stop all the gawking (and useless drinking + waste) that's happening at Spyder lake.

I don't know if you've tried to run little sleuce but it's rough, and I'm on 38's with dual 60's.

The problem I have is where all those losers will now hang out - they used to be controlled at Spyder so we had a great trail after leaving them there. Now, they'll likely move to old sleuce between Spyder and Buck - of course now putting pressure on that area to close (which is the best part of the trail).

If you're concerned about little sleuce I would ask if you've actually run old sleuce in the uphill direction in a JK. in a JKU it is very challenging. Down isn't too bad.

I haven't run that part on the trail, but just because it's very hard doesn't seem to be a reason to change it. If you make all the trails easy then you'll really start seeing a bunch of yahoos on them. It just seems a sham to change such a classic trail.

Yes, but what you're actually doing is forcing the extreme rigs on to fewer and fewer trails. They are changing the trail becuase too many people camp out and spectate there, rather than running it. I just read that they are filling LS in with rocks over the next two days. I guess it will be a highway through there come monday...

Oh , is that the reason they are doing the mods, to stop the gawking? That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard ! where do you get your info. , from wonderland? why don't you find out what you are talking about before you post your misinformation!

I think it would be more produtive to provide additional information if you have some, than to ridicule those that are explainging what it going on. My understanding is the same as Brad's. That part of the trail was unpassable by all but the most extreme rigs and required almost all of those that travel the trail to take the bypass. It also becomes a spot where crowds gather to watch people attempt this section. Usually from my personal experience being there people just tear up thier rigs, spill fluids, and endanger the trail from being open. The changes are designed to keep rigs on the trail (not taking bypasses - some of which aren't approved) and cut down on the activities described above.

I am not in favor of modification of the trail, but I am not in favor of the stuff that usually happens in this section anyway so I can see why they would want to cut down on it.

This happens on Fordyce as well. Winch hill .5 has recently become so challenging that they are removing some rock to make a line that people can make.

Interesting response - But not really surprsing.

I said it was quoted as erosion control. - yes that is the reason you've likely heard too. However, if you had ever been up there - you'd see that entire area is ROCK. The previous three years were used as studies for human waste impact from those who hang out there without bringing a proper restroom (PETT system, etc), Then it was water quality. Then it was erosion. The Rubicon is different than other trails up there because it is a county road. Well, also becuase it traverses two national forests, once being hit with environmental issues and one far less so.

My information comes from USFS communications - EDNF division, plus publications from CA4WD and occasional updates I see on the Pirate Board (one of the trail sponsors). The Rubicon Trail Foundation and the Blue Ribbon coalition also provide information updates on the trail.

The Fordyce approach is an example of effective trail management IMO. They cut a by-pass but kept the challenging section. That way both approaches can be attempted as part of the trail's run. Little Sleuce is too narrow to cut a by-pass in the actual trail. What I don't understand is that immediately to the left of LS, just above the trail, a by-pass exists. I don't understand why they closed that by-pass and make people drive 100 yards off the trail to go around LS. When I started wheeling up there I ran the hill immediately to the right of LS. Most people say thats too steep but I ran that for 5 years before they closed it. Again, it's right off the trail.

In the material posted along with the Project JK VIDEO of EV0-1's last run, it said that LS was created out of a more passable section when 4X4 folks tumbled those big rocks into what the county says was a road. They say they are returning that section of road to the way it apparently was a while back.
