Outa-towner looking for trails
Hello Norcal, I'm gonna be staying in Chico for a few days and I was thinking about hitting some trails and like an idiot I forgot to pack my Funtreks book.
So I'm open to suggestions, and if anyone wants to roll with, that'd be cool too.
Thanks

Are you looking for hardcore stuff or medium trails that are scenic and safe to do by yourself?
Some fun ones that are safe to do on your own are Gold Lake, Deer lake and the Sierra Buttes lookout run. The lookout run is a fun fire road up the mountain the about a 1/2 mile hike to the fire tower, which you can climb and see forever. There is a pictorial on Eddies trail runs as they did this trail last summer.

The start is located in Sierra City which is on highway 49 just east of Downieville. The first few miles go along a beautiful shelf road then into the woods for awhile till you get to the Sierra Buttes lookout road. Then drive all the way up the road till you get to the locked gate, park and hike a half mile or so. Right in the tiny town of Sierra City you turn towards the transfer station and follow the road up to it, where the trail starts.
When you are done with the lookout you can continue to the Gold Lake trail which is a little harder but very scenic. Deer lake trail is short and is about 1/3 of the way down the Gold Lake trail and is a down to the lake and back up trail.
You should be able to google the sierra buttes trail and gold lake trail and get info on both of them.

Oroville has an ohv park by the overflow part of the lake. It's close to hwy 99. It's been a long while since I have been there but had some big rocks to crawl around on and lots of mud when its gets a little rain.
