Default Shasta/Redding Area

Hey all,

We are looking at taking a family trip during spring break down to some better weather.

We are in Oregon near Eugene and are looking for about a days drive away from here. We have been considering the Redding area. Any suggestions for trails and possible RV parks for us to stay at? Things to do or visit in the area?

If we can drive there in about 8-10 hours we are up for other areas to, so other suggestions if you have them. Not really fond of big cities or crowded freeways, not that anyone really is. We just like things a little more rural.

So lets hear some ideas!

One problem is we are getting some late season rains starting this week, so you're going to have to stay fairly low in elevation. Shasta loop is a great family ride, but again snow/weather becomes an issue. I've never been, but I have heard Usal Road south of Eureka is a very pretty drive, but I would call for road conditions before you go.

Depending on snow levels, i5 north of Redding can get pretty nasty. I have family there so I am up there many times a year. I can't comment on RV parks, as I have never had to use one there.

However, there are a lot of cool places to go. Lassen Park is pretty cool, although not sure how much of it is open in the winter. Shasta caverns is also cool, but not sure if its open in the Winter.

Check out visitredding.com as it has a list of what all you can do, as well as places to stay.

Thanks for the replies so far.

If we head south another hour or three from Redding is there much else that way?

I can make it to Shasta in about 6 hours I think. Never drove the motorhome down that stretch of I-5, so not too sure how long it would take in those curves. Been that way in my pickup many times so I am familiar with the road. I just never have any time to stop and check stuff out on the way.

We are looking at the last week of March for the kids' spring break dates. I hope it gets better by then. This storm that hit last night and today really sucks. Even a chance of snow tonight below 1000 feet.

Default Lake Almanor

East of Redding is Lake Almanor. There are some nice campgrounds with Rv hook-ups on the south side of the lake. The area is covered with forest roads that lead into smallers lakes. On the south west side of the lake is Butt Lake. You can go into Butt Lake with the Jeep and there are dozens of trails. There is one trail that will take you over the hill into Belden and Caribou Corner on the Feather river. All of these areas have good fishing and are not crowded.

A little farther south is Oroville. The campground on the lake is not crowded this time of the year and you can head to the hills from there.

My suggestion for you is to go to Shasta Lake. The Butt lake area and Lake Almanor is where I live and the elevation is much higher than what you are looking for. 4,500 ft. to be exact. There are many campgrounds and RV parks in the area and it is beautiful and warm in the spring down there. There is also All 4 directions for you to go and a gorgeous lake with 365 miles of shoreline.
That is where I would go if I were you. Yep! :-)

I checked out lake Almanor, it looks cool. I will google up the Butt Lake area today while I'm at work.
