Tahoe Vacation mid March ?'s
I'm planning a weeklong family vacation mid March in South Tahoe. I want to get in a little fly fishing, light wheeling and hiking during our time there. What trails would be safe to run and what creeks are fish able? I've been researching but I figured I would ask here as well. Thanks
Mid-March is mid ski season, there will likely be snow on the ground, especially at higher elevations. I know nothing about fly fishing, but to wheel a bit, you can go in the Rubicon entrance near Tahoma and snow wheel back a few miles. Nevada has some good trails about an hour north east of SLT.
When I was there a few weeks ago, the snow was plowed up to the entrance and the sign said closed. They've had several feet since then. Might be able to find something down lower. You could take Toll road upto Virginia City. It is over by Geiger Grade. Nothing like Rubicon though. Stop and have a beverage at the bucket of blood saloon. My buddy out there said they just take off across public land. No trail needed.
Streams aren't open to fishing in March; more like mid-April.
And, as was pointed out, there is quite a bit of snow up there and the various logging roads will have still have snow even in April. Across the state line into Nevada will offer better opportunities for wheeling (plus fewer restrictions).
If you go later in the season, there are lots of great trails north of Tahoe, both east and west of Hwy 89.

We are expecting 3'-6' of snow over the next week so I doubt you will be able to even reach the trail head on the rubicon from the lake side. Maybe look into skiing? There is also a big sledding area on Mt Rose hwy called the meadows if you have small children. If you want to drive down to Reno there are tons of trails around Virginia City that are stocker friendly and have some great desert views. Up in Spanish Springs there are trails everywhere, just drive off the pavement and go. If you go down Kingsbury grade from South lake Tahoe make sure to stop at the Genoa bar, the oldest continuous operating bar in Nevada. I live right off Mt. Rose hwy so if you find yourself wanting to do some wheeling over here look me up and I should be able to show you around a bit.
