Oh man,
I might take a job offer up in WA on the Gorge. I've lived in SO CAL all my life so for my family and I, it would be a huge step.

I have been to the Gorge and also to Mt. Hood. I do love the PNW. After seeing all this 'awesomeness' I'm way more inclined to consider the position!

One concern was the accessibility of trails but obviously there is no lack of that!

Take the job!!!; as long as it is a good move for your family and fundage. I grew-up in SoCal; San Fernando Valley. I am home here; can't beat the NW. Access to trails, forest roads, mountains, lakes, etc is just outside your front door.
