Well, I have to say a big thank you is in order for the idea and info you provided about the area! It was definitely a great one and will no doubt go back there again. We only scratched the surface of what there is to see & do there.

Also thank you to Jay for his input, suggesting the China Hat campground (I really liked that place) and the OHV map.

Just an FYI.. If you went all the way to the China Hat Campground you went too far.. There are 3 other campground toward the top of the area that have the out houses.. China Hat Campground was closed because of contamination of the water.. About 3 years ago.. I wish I was there... But is sound like you guys still had a blast.. Did you guys take the jeep trails up to the obseratory or just the dirt road.. ??

Ice Caves.. Also 2 mile tube.. Which is a 2 mile long lava tube you can drive all the way thru.. Very Awesome..


There is so much more to see... Next time..

 

Ohhhh... Funny, but USFS web site still shows the campground as open. Still, it was a good spot... even without water or latrines.

We took the dirt road to the Observatory. Saw that there were some trails on the map, but it appeared that they didn't make it all the way.

Ice Caves! Now that sounds really cool! Add that to the must-see list for next time!
