Default WA state requirements

If you saw Northridge 4x4's Facebook page today, you'll see that mudflaps are required on Jeeps (per Kitsap County's finest). Didn't know if anyone else was aware...(luckily, mine already had them on)...is there anything else we should be aware of? I know my tires stick out maybe about 1 1/2" past the fenders...wonders if this could be a problem if someone really wanted to give me a hard time...

I think if they wanted to give you a hard time...I'm lifted w/ 35's....no problems yet. (also running around doorless and topless due to fine weather...)

Washington state requires that bumpers or fenders must cover from the top of the tire to the axle centerline. If they do not then mudflaps are required to do so.

And that is gay.

I dont have flaps either and I dont plan on buying any. lol. I've heard they will only use it as an excuse to pull someone over if they suspect something else is going on in the vehicle. Maybe it's the wrong attitude to have but I refuse to run flaps, they are ugly as hell.

The whole flaps thing isn't much of an issue for me since I'm stock in the suspension department and close to it with the tires.

I have been keeping an eye out for the ridiculous evergreen state flaps I see on the lifted old fords out in the sticks, or some old school range fire flaps for when she finally grows up a little.

Turns out nobody hangs on to vintage mudflaps.

Saw their status on facebook, found it pretty funny. But I wouldnt worry about it if your tires arent sticking out like 3 inches and its pretty noticable. Cops are looking for easier targets to give tickets to.

x2 on this. I think mud flaps look gay as hell. My Sierra (i traded in today) Had 10'' wide 20s that stuck out about 2in on 35s never got pulled over but the day i took my XJ out on the road with swampers measuring 1.5in out past body i got popped. Guess it depends on the cops day

I got pulled over twice in the same day in a 2 mile stretch in Issaquah for no mud flaps. Luckily I didnt get a fix it ticket from the first state patrol so the second one didnt give me one either, needless to say I now have mud flaps on my stock JKUR with 37's.

As a Deputy Sheriff in this state and soon to be Jeep Owner I feel obligated to post the law you guys are talking about:

RCW 46.37.500
Fenders or splash aprons.

(1) Except as authorized under subsection (2) of this section, no person may operate any motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer that is not equipped with fenders, covers, flaps, or splash aprons adequate for minimizing the spray or splash of water or mud from the roadway to the rear of the vehicle. All such devices shall be as wide as the tires behind which they are mounted and extend downward at least to the center of the axle.

(2) A motor vehicle that is not less than forty years old or a street rod vehicle that is owned and operated primarily as a collector's item need not be equipped with fenders when the vehicle is used and driven during fair weather on well-maintained, hard-surfaced roads.

I personally would never pull anyone over for this unless it is creating at the time of the stop some kind of hazard to other drivers (like rocks being thrown) but there are plenty of other guys that would so just remember to pass the "personality test" and you should be fine.

I've had a few cops behind me and I kick up so much water you could probably take a shower. No tickets yet, and I don't ever plan on running ugly mud flaps!
