looking for beginners mountain bike
looking for some advice for a beginners mountain bike..only using it to go down some dirt/rocky trails..nothing crazy also dont want to spend more then $200.just looking to get a good workout and ejoy the outdoors
Go to wallmart and buy a mongoose or finxd a diamondback dealer. 200 bucks wo t get you much and depending on your size it probably won't last long. 400 bucks will get you a decent starter bike like a Giant or Specalized. Anything cheaper and your wasting your money. Just my 2 cents

Go to a local Giant or Specialized dealer and drop $400-$500. A Wal-Mart bike won't last that long and the components aren't very good. Plus your local dealer will take good care of you and give you a free tune up after your cables have strecthed out and need adjusting.
Do not buy a Department store bike. It will let you down. Repeat, it will let you down. Search craigslist or you local bike shops for some deals. Half of the people who buy bikes new barely ride them. Here is a Trek 820 I picked up for $200. The guy who owned it upgraded to a $1000 bike. My gain there.

For 200 bucks you have to buy used.
As former Trek salesman, I can tell the 820 is a good bike for paved trails but no matter what parts you put on it, it's still a very frame with hybrid geometry.
Essential things to look for in a mountain bike are double walled rims, 8 or 9 speed cassette and good brakes. V brakes are fine. On fact decent v brakes are better than really crappy disc.

I agree with above for $200 you're not going to get much. Look used. I have a Kona Blast and love it.. $800 though a few years back.. my wife who only rides local trails spent $375, so $200 is going to be tough..
For $200, you can score a decent older bike on craigslist.
I'm shocked at the bargains I see from people that buy a sweet bike and never ride it.
Ditto on "DO NOT BUY A WALMART BIKE" advice.
