What you're saying is that you want to bedline the edges of the seat (the vertical part) and fabric paint the actual places where your a$$ and back would rest? If I got this correct, it sounds like it would be killer as long as the bedliner sticks to the fabric. I like it. Can't help you with the pic request though.

 

Seatcovers that actually fit and look nice are really expensive.

I would like for them not to be brown.

As far as priorities go, I figured seats would come before fenders and rails, which must also be replaced.
A/C, stereo already repaired and functional.
I had a busy weekend.
Was able to work on it Saturday and Sunday.

 

I say go for it!! What do you have to lose? If they don't look good you can suck it up until you want to go a different route!! Just be sure to show us the pics when you get done!!

Personally, I would disassemble the seats to evacuate all the mud. The full seat is comprised of 2 covers (upper and lower sections) over foam and a metal frame. I'd wash out the foam pieces and covers separate then let it all air out. Or you could use a household steam cleaner with an upholstery attachment.

One day I was caught in a bad rain storm without my rear quarter panels and rear window. The entire interior got soaked! Fortunately once the seats dried, they looked like new again. The YES Essential fabric maybe? This Summer I freshened them up with my steam cleaner and some warm soapy warmer. Dried quickly again and went back to new appearance. You have a very durable fabric in your JK. If you're not ready to go with seat covers or want to clean the seats then add covers, you may want to go this route.

They came clean last time, but they were soaked more thoroughly.

I would strip them off & try to wash them (preferably at a laundry mat so you don't ruin your washer). I would be surprised if they don't come reasonably clean.

I've used vinyl paint on vinyl seats before & it worked great. I suspect cloth paint would be the way to go. Bedliner would look neat, but I doubt it is flexible enough to not crack.

And congrats on getting the U-Boat running again.

Fabric paint would be the way that I would go. I don't know if there would be enough flex in bedliner to work over the long term.

Given the use that you put your Tonka to though, I would leave the back seat out and bedline that tub...and the dash...and the center console...
