When I'm driving through the western mountains of Maine, I keep it out of overdrive. That's the first and cheapest thing you can do.

Describe your Jeep. It's pretty hard to know what to do without knowing what you have.

Is yours a stock X unlimited with automatic and 3.73 gears?

Run more air in your tires. K and n dropin remove your back seat and only carry your spare on long trips or trail runs. 3 mpg right there

x2

Are you lifted? Running bigger tires?

Re-gearing, while expensive, will likely be the biggest improvement you can make.

I'll say it since no has yet. Its a Jeep. It's not going to get great fuel mileage.

I would not jump to trust the computer for the mpg, if that is what you are using for your figures. It is better to compute it yourself by miles / gallons used and do it a couple of times. It will be the average of all your driving, and that to me is more realistic.

I do get better mileage from high octane fuel, but not enough to warrant the price differences.

The best thing that I did was getting the Superchips flasher. I see about a 2 mpg increase with it, and some increase in performance. Very happy with it.

O/D is on, I assume? Try O/D off and see if it picks up some.

Your highway mileage sounds pretty average. If you won't be needing 4x4 on those long drives, pull the front drive shaft and toss it inside for the trip.
