Default Smittybilt winch - tell me straight up if this is a good deal or not...

Right now I just can't justify a Warn, and this intrigues me...

So a guy near me is selling an XRC10 winch for $300. It is new in the box, never been installed, so he says. It has a cracked controller, damaged in shipping. He says it works fine, and can be fixed with a little bit of epoxy. So, is this a good deal or a rip off?

And does anyone have any real "user feedback" about this winch? I know alot of people run the XRC8, is this just as good? (I know it can handle more weight ).

Help me decide.

How does he know the controller works if the winch has never been installed?

A bunch of guys I know/wheel with have the Smittybilt XRC winch though I think they are the XRC8 version. Wish I had feedback on it but most of them have never used it before!

It sounds like the price is right on your deal and if what is wrong with the controller is just a crack, then go for it. If the guy lets you, take the controller down to 4WheelParts and have them give it a look over to give you some piece of mind.

I have the xrc10 and for that cheap go for it... I love the winch and I've never had a problem with it before... If the only concern you have is a broken remote buy it and worse comes to worse they cant be that expensive to buy seperately.. Good luck to you

My thoughts exactly. I think he based his little assessment on looks alone. Either way, how much can a controller be anyway?

i would say go for it, i have an XRC 10 ($379 shipped @ winchdepot) and have had no issues, if the controler is cracked, get a toggle switch and wire it into the dash anyways, much easier to use there, as for the power of the winch, it has it, i have pulled out several vehicles with it, to include a suburban sunk in the river, just make sure you get a good battery (yellow top) or you will do what i did and fry the factory one, good luck on your decision,

Hmmm....

If a winch like that is $380 new, and he's asking $300 for "new, but damaged" I'd be careful. If you have to replace the controller, there goes most of what you saved.

Also...what is the warranty status on that unit? If it's coming without warranty, I'd just buy a new one.

All good points, but I put in my "best offer." We'll see how it goes. I was thinking about having a wireless remote to control the winch anyway, so if it doesn't work, then that could be an option I guess. Not sure of the warranty status, and that is yet another thing holding me up. We'll se what he says to my best offer of $240.

how well do you know the guy? i would be a little curious as to how he got the winch. supposed brand new in box. why does he have a new winch and selling it. if he ordered the wrong item, then the normal person would return and get the correct item.
that small of a price diference, i would just get the new one from the store, that way you know for sure you have the warranty and any problems in shipping falls on the store
wish i could help you on user experience, but i have heard no complaints from friends with the 8 or 10
